A Winamac man was arrested early Sunday morning after he was reportedly found in possession of methamphetamine.

A Winamac police officer saw a red vehicle in the parking lot by the Pulaski County Public Library with the driver present. The officer knew that vandalism was occurring to a structure by the library so he approached the car.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Leston G. Vaught II, told the officer that he was using the library’s Wi-Fi, according to the police report. A Pulaski County K9 officer and K9 “Terror” arrived on the scene and the K9 did a free air sniff of the vehicle. “Terror” indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. Vaught said there weren’t any drugs in the car and a search by police did not turn up any drugs.

Vaught was searched and officers allegedly found a piece of folded foil and a pen casing that contained a powdery residue in his possession. Vaught reportedly told police that the substance was methamphetamine and that he had used half of the contents. A field test of the foil and the pen casing showed a positive result for methamphetamine, according to the police report.

Vaught was arrested and booked into the Pulaski County Jail.  Pulaski County Prosecutor Stacey Mrak has filed formal charges against Vaught of possession of methamphetamine as a Level 6 felony and possession of paraphernalia as a Class A misdemeanor with the Pulaski Superior Court.

Local charges are pending against a Medaryville woman accused of leading Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputies on a high-speed chase when they tried to arrest her on a federal warrant. A deputy spotted a pickup truck driven Bernice Godina, 62, leaving a rural Medaryville residence late Tuesday morning, according to a news release from Sheriff Mike Gayer. The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but Godnia reportedly fled west through rural Pulaski County. While driving, Godina was allegedly throwing money, drug paraphernalia and other items from the truck. The pursuit continued into Jasper County, where a Pulaski County deputy used stop sticks to flatten her tires. Godina continued to drive on the rim until her truck was forced off the road near the intersection of U.S. 231 and State Road 14. Deputies say she tossed a shotgun out the window as the truck was stopping. She was arrested without further incident and is jailed on a hold from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
